Surgical Weight Loss

Bariatric Weight Loss Surgery: Safer than living with obesity.

Obesity is a life-threatening disease affecting 1 in 3 of all adults in the US. It is associated with co-morbidities such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, arthritis, and other conditions.

Your Appointment

At your appointment we will check your height and weight and calculate your BMI. You will meet with Dr. Bisland personally to discuss whether or not you are a candidate for surgical weight loss. Surgical weight loss options will be discussed with you if you meet the criteria. We will then begin the process of preparing you for surgery by having you meet with the dietician and any other appointments the doctor feels are necessary based on your individual medical needs.

Procedure

Candidates for weight loss surgery include patients with a BMI > 35 with co-morbidities (e.g., diabetes, high blood pressure) or a BMI > 40. Some insurances cover bariatric surgery depending on each individual policy.

The surgery takes 1-2 hours to perform, and most patients stay overnight in the hospital and are discharged the following morning. On average, the patient can expect to lose about 70-80% of his/her excess weight with the sleeve gastrectomy. Following bariatric surgery, approximately 70-80% of patient’s diabetes and/or high blood pressure resolves.

Currently, Dr Bisland is the areas only Fellowship trained Minimally Invasive Surgeon. He performed his surgical training at LSU in New Orleans and then went on to a Fellowship in Minimally Invasive/Bariatric Surgery in Miami, Florida.

Sleeve Gastrectomy

Sleeve gastrectomy is a surgical weight-loss procedure in which the stomach is reduced to about 15% of its original size, by surgical removal of a large portion of the stomach, following the major curve. The open edges are then attached together (often with surgical staples) to form a sleeve or tube with a banana shape.
